Introduction of solar pumps for irrigation in Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso

Titre : Introduction of solar pumps for irrigation in Burkina Faso

Pays : Burkina Faso

Date/Durée : 2017

Descriptif
Small-scale private irrigation improves food security and smallholder incomes. Many smallholders use manual labor or motor pumps for irrigation. Thanks to the fall in prices of photo-voltaic panels, today solar pumping has become an interesting and viable alternative. However, in Burkina Faso there is still no solar pump for individual use adapted to the needs of small producers.

PRACTICA has developed a range of solar pumps with characteristics suitable for small private irrigation. This project introduces appropriate solar pumps in Burkina Faso so that smallholders can access solar pumping solutions via a sustainable distribution and marketing chain.

Activités
* Characterisation of producer profiles and technical needs in REGIS-ER program areas * Establishment of a solar pumping demonstration site * Implementation of local production of solar pumps PI and Volanta I * Marketing of the SF1 pump * Analysis of demand and development of the distribution chain

Objectifs
* Develop an import network for the SF1 pump (solar pump Sunflower 1, produced in India) in Burkina Faso, with a distribution network in Niger * Local production of the PI solar pump (Intermediate depth) and the Volanta I pump in Burkina Faso * Advocacy for solar pumping to all stakeholders (small producers, NGOs, private sector, government) * Field operation of a significant number of pumps in Burkina Faso to promote solar pumping and obtain customer feedback

Financement : USAID
Budget : 165,000 USD
