Intensification of agricultural production through upscaling of innovative adapted irrigation practices and technologies (IRRINN)

Burkina Faso

Titre : Intensification of agricultural production through upscaling of innovative adapted irrigation practices and technologies (IRRINN)

Pays : Burkina Faso

Date/Durée : 2021

Descriptif
PRACTICA is a technical partner in a new EU-funded small-scale irrigation project in Burkina Faso called IRRINN. It is a research project with the aim of achieving an impact on development. The project is coordinated by CIRAD and will be implemented with 6 project partners. For 4 years, different “irrigation solutions” will be tested and documented in an iterative participatory process. Successful solutions will be capitalized for scaling up. The project will focus on 2 types of irrigation ; 1) Small Private Irrigation and 2) Complementary Irrigation with Small Stormwater Collection Basins (BCER). PRACTICA will mainly contribute to the Small Private Irrigation type.

Activités
* The creation of spaces for dialogue and reflection at the territorial level to involve local actors in the definition of solutions adapted to their needs and in strategic decision-making ;
* The improvement of Innovation Support Services (ISS) in line with the needs of local actors. These activities are expected to strengthen the capacity of individuals and organizations to innovate ;
* The co-construction of irrigation solutions adapted to the local context. The solutions will be co-designed with the producers on the basis of the capitalization of experiences and in-depth diagnoses of the situations, before being tested, evaluated and adapted within the framework of a participatory and interdisciplinary action research approach.
* The mobilization and strengthening of the PARIIS knowledge management framework for the capitalization, sharing and dissemination of knowledge in the form of information and communication materials adapted to the needs of the diversity of target audiences ;
* The construction of impact tracks adapted to the national context based on feedback on the changes and effects induced by the project at different levels. From these activities, it is expected that strategies for institutionalization and scaling up of irrigation solutions will be developed.

Objectifs
The overall objective of the project is to remove the technical, financial, economic, organizational and institutional constraints that limit the development of small-scale irrigation in different productive, social and environmental contexts in order to increase irrigated areas, increase productivity and farm incomes, reduce food insecurity and poverty, and increase the resilience of populations to climate risk.

The specific objective of the project is to set up operational and institutional mechanisms to support innovation systems that will place producers at the centre of the system for the development of irrigation solutions.
