Exploring the scope of low-cost drilling for communal water supply (Niger)

Niger

Titre : Exploring the scope of low-cost drilling for communal water supply (Niger)

Pays : Niger

Date/Durée : 2008 -2009

Descriptif
The construction of wells for drinking water supply in Niger had long been featured by high costs which deprived many households from clean drinking water. Low-cost options were available for agriculture use, but not applied in the drinking water sector. In 2005, PRACTICA and UNICEF started to explore the scope for a professional use of manual drilling technologies to reduce the costs of drinking water supply. PRACTICA carried out the mapping of favourable areas for integrating low cost drilling and rural water supply and provided technical assistance to the introduction of quality but low-cost practices. As a result, the cost of boreholes has decreased by 5- 10 times.

Activités
* Evaluation of structures at low cost and ability of the private sector * Training to local companies about manufacture and installation of low cost technologies, technical maintenance and repairs * Thematic mapping of suitable areas* Estimated population located in areas suitable for low cost drilling

Objectifs
* Analyze social acceptance Package “drill-pump systems with low cost” beneficiaries (for purposes of drinking water). * Identify relevant and innovative approaches to operators who installed this package and appreciate the ways of managing water points to ensure structural durability.* Analyze the point of view of the socio-economic strengths and weaknesses of existing low cost drilling in Niger and make appropriate recommendations in order to integrate the small holes in the national drinking water system.
