Résumé THE THERMOPHILIC ANAEROBIC DIGESTION OF OLIVE OIL MILL WASTES WAS INVESTIGATED . THEY WERE FOUND TO BE AMONG THE MOST POLLUTED WASTE OF THE FOOD INDUSTRY AND TOPIC FOR MANY PLANTS AND AQUATIC ORGANISMS. OLIVE OIL MILL WASTE WATERS ARE AMENABLE TO ANAEROBIC DIGESTION WITH THE CONCOMITANT RELEASE OF CONSIDERABLE AMOUNTS OF METHANE. THE MINIMUM SOLIDS RETENTION TIME WAS 3.02 DAYS, CORRESPONDING TO A MAXIMUM SPECIFIC GROWTH RATE OF 0.331D-1. WHEN GROUND OLIVE TREE LEAVES WERE ADDED, THE MINIMUM RETENTION TIME WAS 5.78 DAYS AND THE MAXIMUM SPECIFIC GROWTH RATE 0.173D-1. THE BIOMASS YIELD WAS 0.289 AND 0.247 KGVSS/KGCOD+ DESTROYED, RESPECTIVELY. THE AUTO DESTRUCTION RATE WAS 0.063 AND 0.33D- 1,RESPECTIVELY. THE DIGESTOR OFF GASES WERE 82.4 AND 79.5% (AVERAGE), RESPECTIVELY. METHANE PRODUCTIVITY WAS 0.422 AND 0.416 M3/KGCOD+ DESTROYED FOR BOTH CASES, RESPECTIVELY.COD+ REMOVAL WAS 78.2 AND 67.3%, RESPECTIVELY. TENTATIVE METHANE PRODUCTION, FOR RETENTION TIME 10 DAYS, SHOWED THAT SUBSTRATE INHIBITION 13 OBSERVED AT LOADING RATES OF 11 KG MIXED COD/MG3/D. ON THE BASIS OF THE OBTAINED RESULTS DESIGNCRITERIA FOR FULL SCALE UNITS WERE DEVELOPED. ALSO, THE DIGESTOR SLUDGE WAS EVALUATED TO BE A GOOD FERTILIZER.
