With high early marriage rates and frequent childbearing, first-time mothers in Niger are particularly vulnerable : they have less access to quality sexual and reproductive health services and are not empowered to advocate for their own health. Pathfinder is addressing the integrated health needs of this group—and the entire community around them—so they can exercise their right to contraception.

Actions
* Train community health workers (agent relais) to conduct household visits to increase young people’s access to sexual and reproductive health care
* Increase first-time mothers’ knowledge, agency, and skills for healthy decision-making through support groups and household visits by agents relais
* Partner with communities, including men, to tackle the root causes of gender inequality and promote healthy timing and spacing of pregnancies
* Create a supportive environment for young people’s use of contraception among mothers-in-law and religious leaders, who have significant influence
