Résumé

THE INCREASING WATER DEMAND, DURING THE LAST DECADES, HAS RESULTED IN AN OVEREXPLOITATION OF GROUNDWATER, OBSERVED MAINLY IN PLAIN REGIONS. ON THE OTHER HAND, A VARIETY OF FOOD - CONTROLLING ENGINEERING WORKS (RIVERS DIVERSIONS, ADJUSTMENTS OF STREAM AND RIVER BEDS, DRAINAGE SYSTEMS, ETC.) HAVE BEEN BUILT SINCE THE LATE 1950S AIMING AT SELF SUFFICIENCY IN WATER RESOURCES, IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE THEN CONCEIVED DRAINAGE SYSTEM MANAGEMENT. THESE INTERVENTIONS HAVE CAUSED A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE OF THE GROUNDWATER RECHARGING REGIME. THE FACTSMENTIONED ABOVE HAVE LED TO THE PHENOMENA OBSERVED NOWADAYS, SUCH AS DRAMATIC GROUNDWATER LEVEL DECLINE, REDUCTION BY HALF OR MORE OF THE EXPLOITABLE YIELD OF WATER SUPPLY WELLS, DOWNGRADING OF GROUNDWATER QUALITY, ETC. THE APPLICATION OF ARTIFICIAL RECHARGE (AR) CAN POSITIVELY AND SUBSTANTIALLY CONTRIBUTE TO RESTORING THE OVERALL DISTURBANCE OF THE EXISTING GROUNDWATER REGIME, WHENEVER THE SITUATION IS CURABLE. THE FUTURE OF ARTIFICIAL RECHARGE LOOKS QUITE HOPEFUL AS UNDERGROUND STORAGE IS BECOMING A MAJOR ALTERNATIVE FOR OVERCOMING SHORT - TERM, SEASONAL, OR LONG - TERM DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WATER SUPPLY AND DEMAND. ARTIFICIAL GROUNDWATER RECHARGE TECHNIQUES HAVE BEEN USED THROUGHOUT THE WORLD FOR MORE THAN 200 YEARS FOR A VARIETY OF PURPOSES. THE MAIN ONES INCLUDE : GROUNDWATER MANAGEMENT, REDUCTION OF FLOOD FLOW, RENOVATION OF WASTEWATER, COMBATTING ADVERSE CONDITIONS
