Présentation
The West African hand woven textile industry is threatened with extinction. This has left around 100,000 weavers, spinners, dyers, tailors and their families unemployed and created an exodus of rural people to the cities to seek work. Most clothing and textiles are now imported, or if made locally, use imported yarns, fabric and synthetic components. Deep End is working to revive handloom textiles and reverse the rural exodus, by revitalising and
upgrading traditional skills, strengthening local production capacity and building up new overseas markets in Europe and North America. They’’re helping to increase the income potential of cotton producing farmers, craft workers, weavers, spinners, dyers and tailors whose livelihoods have been destroyed by the imported cotton clothes which have flooded the market in recent years. The project is helping to create a sustainable future for skilled craftspeople and families, using a model that can be replicated elsewhere.
