On May 6 2019 Dr Hage Geingob President of the Republic of Namibia declared a state of emergency due to poor rainfall and the prevalent drought within the country. To complement this the Namibia Red Cross Society Spanish Red Cross and British Red Cross collaborated to support an additional 599 HHs over a period of four months. Cash assistance has not been used as a standard response modality in Namibia but for this project the Government of Namibia has agreed that the NRCS could trial the distribution of cash among affected HHs and farmers. In October 2019 the government of Namibia extended the state of emergency and national disaster period by six months to March 2020 stating that the number of people in need of aid had more than tripled to 900 000 (more than 30% of the population) Delegate : BRC sent Stephen H from the global surge team for 2 -3 month periods. Location : Sibbinda Constituency Zambezi Region Namibia Bens : 1 211 HH Donor : None However 75K for Phase 1 and 200K for Phase 2 came from DF PNSs : Spanish Red Cross and German RC Budget : Phase 1 BRC sent 175K and Phase 2 BRC sent an additional 200K Current Situation (Dec 2019) : In September 2019 additional funding provided by the German Red Cross and German Government expanded the intervention within the targeted communities registering an additional 612 households raising the total to 1 211 households. The intervention was later extended to March 2020 with additional cash distributions added in November January February and March.
