The project empowers marginalized communities in the Kalahari to become self-sufficient and to strengthen their ability to cope with a changing society through developing practical life supporting skills and knowledge. The focus is, in particular, on involving youth and women and motivating them in education and training. The beneficiaries are the minorities in Botswana, especially the indigenous people of the Kalahari (San), which have, due to the changes in society, displaced from their traditional homes t o urban neighborhoods. Their standard of living and level of education are lagging behind and unemployment, hopelessness and alcoholism are gaining ground. Many are illiterate, without a permanent job or livelihood. The project aims to find solutions to problems together with the communities. The FELM and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Botswana ELCB mapped out possibilities of starting a community development project in the south-western circuit in Kalahari. The ground survey was carried out in four sett lements, of which Ghanzi was selected as pilot area.
