ORGANIC CROP PROTECTION AGAINST WITCHWEED

Kenya

Titre : ORGANIC CROP PROTECTION AGAINST WITCHWEED

Pays  : Kenya

Date/Durée : Jan 2022 // June 2024

Projet ID : KEN 1215-21

Description
Western Kenya has been particularly badly affected by the rapid spread of striga, a parasitic plant, which has destroyed at least 30 percent of maize and millet crops there. Commonly known as witchweed, striga causes damage before it even breaks through the soil. Welthungerhilfe’s approach is built around deploying an organic pesticide derived from a mushroom. The Toothpick Project aims to provide as many farmers as possible with affordable access to the substrate, and a new laboratory is trying to directly infuse seeds with the pesticide in order to protect crop plants from the outset.
