As an important energy replacement area in China,the prognostic reserves of coal are as high as 2.19×1012 t in Xinjiang,while the raw coal production reaches 2.70×10 8t/a.Furthermore,the mining land is almost 1.7 times that of urban land and 1.5 times that of organic-town land in Xinjiang.So,coal-related activities constitute one of the important sources of anthropogenic disturbance.Among the 5 coal bases(including Zhundong,Tuha,Yili,Kubai,and Hefeng),Yili has relatively more abundant rainfall.But the other four have a generally harsh natural conditions dominated by Desert or Gobi,with an arid climate and extremely fragile ecology.Thus,land degradation due to mining disturbance is severe and extremely difficult to restore once damaged.Besides,the resources or elements such as Coal Resources(CR),Water Resources(WR),and Physical Geography&Ecosystem(PGE)also have regional differences,due to the vast area of Xinjiang which accounts for about 1/6 of China.This also determines that the performance,state,processes,trends,and causes of Land Ecosystem Degradation(LED)in different types of Desert Mining Areas(DMAs)is not entirely consistent,and their regulation strategies might also be discrepant.To sum up,in DMAs,coal mining is the source of disturbance,fragile ecology is the root of degradation,and land restoration is the path of governance.The above indicates that protecting fragile ecosystems and curbing land degradation are not only the basis for green mine construction in DMAs in Xinjiang,but also the premise for the correct selection of Mine Ecological Restoration(MER)measures.Practically,however,the concept of LED in DEMs has not been scientifically defined for a long time,resulting in different measurement standards,ambiguous driving mechanisms,and unclear regulation strategies.To this end,the main methods included bibliometrics,logical reasoning,3S integrated application,field survey-visit communication,mathematical modeling,and empirical research.The objectives were to reveal the state,trend and causes of LED of DMAs in Xinjiang,and innovate their regulation strategies.Specifically,it included 5 aspects.(1)Constructing a general conceptual model of LED in Coal Mining Areas(CMAs) ;(2)Classifing the CMAs in Xinjiang by integrating CR-WR-PGE ;(3)Evaluating the state,processes,and trends of LED in DMAs ;(4)Retrospective analyzing the effect mechanism of mining-related activities(MRA),climate change(CC),and other human activities(OHA)on LED in DMAs ;(5)Proposing the regulation strategies based on Land Degradation Neutrality(LDN)for LED in DMAs.Meanwhile,two coal bases,Zhundong and Kubai,were selected for empirical research according to the interactive idea of"theoretical analysis+case application".The main conclusions were listed as follows.1)A conceptual model for assessment and regulating LED in CMAs was constructed.Firstly,the concept and connotation of LED in CMAs were identified,and the influence factor and process of LED in CMAs were explained
