The western Liaoning region is located in a semi-arid zone.The annual precipitation is 300-500 mm,which is significantly lower than the annual evaporation of 1000 to 3000 mm.The area is rich in mineral resources,and the long-term development of mineral resources has led to a large area of land occupation,forming abandoned mining sites,tailings ponds and waste stone piles.The area has rare vegetation,serious soil loss,significantly reduced biodiversity and seriously degraded ecosystem.Beipiao city lies in the western Liaoning region,which is a typical resource-based city.In the long-term development of mineral resources in the past hundred years,there are a variety of abandoned mines.It is more difficult to restore the vegetation in the mining area because of the single vegetation type,thin soil layer,many gravel,low water holding performance,and fragile ecological environment.Therefore,considering the characteristics of urban sludge,fly ash and blast furnace slag,Beipiao city soilless mine abandoned land was selected as object to study the synthetic soil suitable for the growth of plants.Studying the vegetation restoration technology suitable for abandoned mine in semi-arid area by selecting herbs and shrubs with landscaping and economic benefits,which are appropriate in this region,is of great significance to the rapid recovery of vegetation,restoring and improving the ecological environment resistance ability and realizing the organic combination of the effective utilization of municipal solid waste and ecological environment protection.The specific research results are as follows :(1)In view of the nature and composition of urban sludge,fly ash,loess and blast furnace slag in Beipiao city,different types of artificial soil were synthesized.The water holding properties of different types of artificial soil are clarified through water-holding and evaporation experiments.As ayed by analysis,the toxicity of heavy metals and vegetable nutrients in artificial soil were evaluated
