Résumé
This thesis, defined in three chapters, aims to provide some economic insights about the intra-household dynamics in Iran : Chapter 1 : Enriching the empirical work on the impact of women empowerment on expenditure for children in the context of Iran Building on previous empirical analyses on HIES dataset (the Household income and expenditure survey of Iran), this chapter is dedicated to assessing the effects of women’s empowerment on household expenditure for children in Iran. This empirical analysis is based on including individual as well as contextual proxies for empowerment used in the literature using the provincial setting of HIES reporting with the goal of enriching the results and improve their accuracy. Chapter 2 : Developing a theoretical framework for household behaviour The second chapter of the PhD project is dedicated to developing economic models to shed light on the intrahousehold dynamics in the context of MENA countries in general and Iran in particular. Women in Iran and MENA countries face a paradoxical situation in which their economic role remains limited despite major improvements in their health and education. This chapter aims to extend non-Cooperative model and Nash Bargaining models of household behaviour with entering the effect of altruism to explain the observed paradox that current economic models fail to explain. Chapter 3 : Extension of the empirical work to capture cultural and social factors The third and final chapter of the PhD project is dedicated to another extension of the empirical work with inclusion of datasets on time use and cultural and social factors. In this chapter we want to use propensity score matching for fusing datasets. Based on this method, merging 3 dataset (HIES, Time Use Survey, and World Value Survey) allows us to build a new comprehensive dataset that can be used for empirical analysis.
