Résumé
In the present study, the richness and functional diversity of the medium and large-sized mammal community in the Serra da Capivara National Park were studied ; the unit is located in the semi-arid biome of the Caatinga of northeastern Brazil. With the use of camera-traps surveys between 2009 and 2011 data was gathered on the occurrence of medium and large mammals in this conservation unit, and through the addition of geographic covariates, relationships between these and the richness and functional diversity in the conservation units were sought. A positive correlation was found between the functional diversity of the carnivores and the covariates “Distance to Towns” and “Altitude” (adjusted R² = 0.1927 ; F = 7.565 ; p = 0.0014 ; Simulations = 1000), and this pattern followed the model : (FDcarnivora = 0.329*Distance to Towns + 0.324*Altitude). This relationship could be explained by the extreme environmental conditions that this biome represents for these species, forcing them to search for higher regions where they can thermoregulate during the extreme high temperatures, as well as the strong poaching in the region.
