Résumé
One of the major environmental problems of the past decades is the case of atmospheric pollution which can be divided into two main components, those of natural origin and those of anthropogenic origin. Aerosols are undoubtedly the most dangerous pollutant across both categories, with natural aerosols having a greater impact upon the climate as their concentrations are greater than their anthropogenic counterpart on a global scale. Desert dust, which comprises a large part of the natural aerosols, has various effects and depending on the size, the geometry and the compositions of its particles can affect the temperature equilibrium (absorption, scattering), rainfall (interactions with clouds) and also the sum of chemical reactions happening in the atmosphere (reactions taking place on the particles’ surface).The current thesis aims to compare data acquired via satellite versus those produced by an arithmetic model, in the grater area of Qatar, in order to examine the rate of their agreement. The data concern vertical profiles of extinction coefficients of desert dust by measurements from the Calipso satellite and those produced by the photochemical air quality model CAMx, for this particular area. Values of PM10 and PM2.5 extinction coefficients are used for the time period concerning April through June of 2015. The statistical analysis is achieved via the computational software MATLAB.
