Résumé
This thesis examines the variation of different methods of categorization in intermittent rivers in the island of Crete. The theoretical framework of intermittent rivers is very important for the outcome of the research and for the conclusions made. The thesis is about showing how time, spatial scale, and the river flow will affect the way that a researcher will study and manage rivers. In this research fourteen (14) rivers have been studied within six (6) hydrological years. A time-lapse video was extracted for each of the two categorization methods. The motive of this study is the Water framework Directive 2000/60/EK, but also the general belief among scientists that intermittent rivers constitute the majority of the rivers in a global scale. While doing the research it was clear that when we change one of the primary factors, it affects the way that the results are shown and defined. In other words, these factors influence the way that a researcher must manage the data depending on these three factors. The GIS environment (ArcMap, QGis) was critical for the data illustration for maps and for the creation of video time-lapse. In conclusion the ecological error is observed between the examples.
