Présentation
Discussing Islamism becomes more complex when the perception of Islamists to women’s issues is invoked. Actually, this idea will be the bulk of this research paper. This research paper will look at two polemical issues. The first one is Islamic feminism and the second is Islamic feminism in the Moroccan Islamist group al-Adl wa al-Ihsan (justice and spirituality). Islamist groups are often depicted both by the West and by local regimes as lagging behind modernity. Also, women in Islamic societies are often seen as oppressed and passive. In order to fuse the two subjects, I have chosen to talk about Islamic feminism in Islamist groups taking al-Adl wa al-Ihsan as my case study. Likewise, the paper’s analysis of this subject will help dismantle the stereotypes on Islamist groups as being all backward and terrorist and deconstruct the belief that women in Muslim societies are passive. In this research paper, I am using “Islamic groups” and “Islamist groups” interchangeably. This does not mean that the first is moderate and the second is radical. I am aware the word “Islamist” includes the peaceful, the violent and the reactionary.
