It is impossible for bios to survive without water, which is an indispensable natural resource for life and water has become a strategic resource with increasing importance. Climate change and global warming, which are among the factors that have direct or indirect effects on water resources, cause negative effects such as increased evaporation, decreasing trend of precipitation or change in precipitation regime. These negative effects create a significant pressure on traditional surface water storages such as dams and ponds, which have an important place in meeting water demands such as drinking and using, agricultural irrigation, etc. For this reason, the importance of using groundwater effectively and efficiently in order to ensure sustainable water supply is increasing day by day. Underground dams can be a suitable solution for sustainable water supply in regions with arid and semi-arid climates where precipitation is irregular and insufficient. In addition, it can be built as an economical and good alternative in cases where the surface dams cannot be built due to unsuitable topographical, geological, meteorological etc. conditions, high cost and unprofitability. The aim of this study is to examine the geological, topographic and hydrogeological structure of Bursa province, which is the study area, and to make a preliminary study on the determination and selection of suitable locations for the construction of underground dams with taking into account the demand for water, which is a social factor. For this purpose, as a result of the literature review, some influential factors were determined, approaches were evaluated and the Geographic Information System (GIS) was used. Determined influential factors were listed as follows ; river network, slope, distance to access roads, distance to faults, natural and artificial surface water storages, distance to settlements, agricultural irrigation areas, water demand, geological and topographic suitability, distance to consumption point and finally alluvial layer thickness and groundwater level depth. A total of 6 underground dam points, which could be suitable for construction that meet the requirements and/or constraints created by the determined influential factors, were determined and possible reservoir volumes were calculated. When these 6 underground dams and reservoir volumes were evaluated, the following conclusion was reached ; even though the water stored in the reservoir is lower than the surface dams, underground dams can be considered as an alternative or complementary solution in terms of supplying drinking and/or irrigation water needs for rural settlements with less population and therefore less water demand compared to large settlements. In addition, it has been observed that GIS software provides a significant convenience in determining a suitable location, which is the first stage of the construction process of underground dams, in large-scale areas such as Bursa, which is the study area.
