Résumé
Tripoli, the capital city of Libya, is located in the north western part of the country. Economically, it is considered as the most important settlement area where industrial and agricultural activities are increasing continuously day by day. The climate of the region is classified as arid to semi arid. During the last 30 years water demands of the city are met by the groundwater resources. Over exploitation of the upper aquifer in the area resulted in lowering the water table below mean sea level and degradation of the water quality. This study aims to evaluate the present situation of the upper aquifer as it has been affected by seawater intrusion and man-made activities. Multiple approaches have been applied ; it included spatial and temporal measurements of the electrical conductivity versus depth, water chemistry analysis and isotopic studies. All results were transferred to a computer environment in the form of database and organized in Geographical Information System (GIS) media. It facilitates manipulation and interpretation of the historical and created field work database. Results of the current study reveal that seawater intrusion shape is occurring in the form of upconing phenomena along a parallel line ranges between 3-4 km length from the coast line. Upconing phenomena is resulted due to the dramatical decline of the water table elevation which associated by degradation of the water quality. Areal and cross sectional profiles of the electrical conductivity shows three spots of high salinity. In view of the hydrochemical analysis, three categories of water quality is detected, fresh water, mixed water and saline water. Heavy metal analyses indicate groundwater contamination occurs/resulted by human activities. Analysis of environmental stable isotope data indicated three groups of water from different origin recharge.
