Résumé
Desertification is the main limiting factor of sustainable land use in arid and semi-arid regions. Various models have been developed to determine the causes of desertification and to evaluate severity of desertification. This study aims to apply the MEDALUS (Mediterranean Desertification and Land Use) model to determine the environmentally sensitive areas of Kazova Plain and surrounding lands on piedmonts. Soil quality, vegetation quality, management quality and climate quality components of MEDALUS model were characterized with field observations, filed measurements, soil analyses in laboratory and compiling the several data bases.Environmentally sensitive areas (ESA) have been determined with the geometric means of four indictors. Four hundred fifty one surface soils were collected and analyzed to determine several physical and chemical characteristics. Calcium carbonate (r= 0.48) and plant available phosphorus (r= 0.46)had statistically significant (P<0.01) and the highest correlations with the soil quality index (SQI). Electrical conductivity had the lowest effect (r=0.13) on SQI. The correlation between ESA Index and indicators revealed that management quality had the highest (r=0.86) and SQI had the lowest (r=0.13) impact on degradation of lands in study area. Intensive soil tillage practices used in almost majority of the study area resulted in such fragility of lands to the degradation. The use of ESAI map, quality indicator maps and the distribution maps of individual parameters used in calculation of indicators will allow to locate the sensitive areas that might cause problems in the future. Taking early measures in environmentally sensitive areas enables to sustain productivity for long period of time.
