A country’s water potential changes depending on its geographical location, geological structure, topography and flora. Precipitation is the most important factor that affecting the water potential and it shows great spatial and temporal changes. In particular, determining the spatial distribution of precipitation in a region ; it benefiting from assessments of wet and arid regions and future drought forecasting studies, as well as it is extremely important in risk analysis and management studies and sustainable water resources management studies. The geographical location, physical geography factors and climatic characteristics of Turkey are effective in changing the spatial distribution and amount of the precipitation according to regions. In this study, spatial distribution maps of precipitation were created by using different interpolation methods for each of the geographical regions in Turkey, and the most appropriate interpolation method for precipitation data prediction has been tried to be determined. The purpose of the precipitation data estimation using different interpolation methods in the study ; to estimate the data in case of missing precipitation data, and also to evaluate the performance of the interpolation methods on a regional basis by determining which of the results obtained from the methods used gives results closer to the actual data. 240 meteorology stations in Turkey were classified according to geographical regions and these stations the monthly average precipitation values of these stations between 1965 and 2017 were used in the study and some of the stations were reserved as test stations for accuracy analysis. Spatial distribution maps of precipitation were prepared by using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Inverse Distance Weighting-IDW Method, Kriging Interpolation Method, Spline Interpolation Method and then estimated data of precipitation the determined test stations were obtained. The precipitation estimation data obtained using these three interpolation methods and the actual precipitation data of the stations were compared by calculating the root mean square error (RMSE) and coefficient of determination (R²) values. As a result of the analysis, it was seen that the success of the interpolation methods used varies from region to region. According to other interpolation methods used IDW method in Mediterranean, Aegean, Central Anatolia, Black Sea and Marmara Regions, Kriging and IDW method according to Spline method in Southeastern Anatolia Region, Spline and Kriging method according to IDW method in Eastern Anatolia Region gave better results.
