Résumé
The purpose of this communication was to report to the scientific community the interventions in the areas of animal health and well-being carried out during the episode of the Northeastern donkeys victims of the international trade that occurred in Bahia. It is essential to change the approach to donkey management in Brazil, and to appeal to the need to identify ethical and sustainable ways to incorporate them into a productive chain in the 21st century. Donkeys have anatomical and physiological characteristics peculiar to the species, have high adaptability to animals. environmental factors, ease of movement in irregular terrains and reproductive efficiency in semiarid environments, which allowed them to be inserted in South America for loading and traction activities. With the advent of mechanization of transport and agricultural production, donkeys had their importance diminished, leading the species to marginalization and as a consequence the abandonment of thousands of animals on roads and highways, causing traffic accidents and constituting a significant reservoir of infectious diseases, such as Equine Infectious Anemia (IEA), Mormo and some arboviruses. From this scenario of vulnerability, donkeys began to be targeted by the Chinese industry that collects and slaughters them for the meat and skin trade, with the main intention of selling a spice called ejiao. At the beginning of 2019, about 800 northeastern donkeys, confined in an area used as a receiving warehouse and sent for slaughter, were abandoned in Canudos-BA, but after reports of mistreatment, civil society acted to save the animals. A task force was set up that planned actions with veterinary and zootechnical activities acting daily in the sanitary management, feeding and clinical care of assistance to abandoned donkeys. In this group, positive cases of glanders, IEA, herpesvirus and equine babesiosis were diagnosed. This work contextualizes donkey extraction in northeastern Brazil for the international skin market, focusing on recent occurrences and health aspects.
