Résumé
Water security is the guarantee of water in quantity and quality for human supply, the practice of economic activities, as well as the maintenance and balance of ecosystems. The issue becomes important mainly for the northeast, due to its high water vulnerability, where in periods of drought, much of the region faces shortages, leaving cities in a situation of public calamity due to lack of water. In view of this, it is necessary to adopt measures by the competent authorities, such as public works and policies that guarantee access to water in the semi-arid region. In this perspective, aiming at better decision-making for vulnerable regions, within the National Water Security Plan (PNSH), the Water Security Index (ISH) was developed, which measures the human, economic, ecosystem and resilience dimensions. In this sense, the present study aimed to analyze water security in the municipalities of Caicó, Cruzeta and São João do Sabugi, all located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte and which are part of the Brazilian semiarid region, where it was possible to verify that the supply of municipalities, when it depends only on its main reservoirs, it is not enough to guarantee water security. Of the three areas analyzed, only one municipality had grade 3 (medium) security, the other two were grade 2 (low). In addition, it was possible to verify that the high water demand of the population for their daily needs, ends up reducing the supply of water for the operation of other sectors of society, impacting the socioeconomic development of the municipalities. These results show the importance of water security calculation for areas where there is a risk of water shortages, alerting authorities to the need for interventions to improve the management of water resources in order to supplement their supply.
