Résumé partiel
Management of solid wastes is a major challenge these days for the administrators, engineers and planners. The enormous amount of . solid wastes is generated and need to be followed scientific and environmental friendly disposal methods. The enormous generation ofsolid waste and unscientific disposal ofsolid waste can affect the environment and human health. To protect the environment and public health, disposal ofsolid waste in scientifically designed engineered landfill sites is one of the solutions. By selecting an environmental friendly dump site for municipal solid waste disposal we can minimize the impact on the environment. For identification of safe waste disposal site, Geographical Information System (GIS) is well suited. For site selection process, several factors should be considered. For this purpose, there is a need of decision support system. GIS and Multi Criteria Analysis provide a platform for the selection of suitable landfill sites because it allows accurate digital database generation. Keeping with this view, the present study is carried out with an objective of environment friendly site selection for municipal solid waste dumping in Kakinada city using remote sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS) techniques and to analyze the information of solid waste management with the view to protect the environment and public health. Kakinada is one of the fastest developing cities with a population of 3.13 lakh in 2011 in urban agglomeration. The city has around 83 thousand houses which generate 260 tons of solid waste per day. It is being dumped at unauthorized dumping yard cheedelapora near saradamba temple - located amidst residential areas. Cheedelapora is the disposal site of municipal solid waste generated from the city. The solid waste collected is being transported to the cheedelapora disposal site where is being disposed indiscriminately. Presently it is practicing open crude indiscriminate disposal ofsolid waste. Keeping with this view the need for authorized and safe disposal sites, an attempt has been made in this study to identify potential sites for disposal of solid waste generated from various sources in Kakinada city. Before the site selection process, the amount of solid waste generated, waste generated by different categories of sources, percebtage of waste collected to generate, collection type, segregation, total quantity of waste disposed by open dumping, per capita MSW generation, Processing and disposal ofsolid waste in Kakinada city have studied. The present study revealed that the groundwater quality has been significantly affected by leachate percolation. The values of WQI (Water Quality Index) substantiate the poor quality of water as more than 100 WQI has been observed near the dump site (Table 5.10). The high values ofWQI also reveal anon-compliance ofMSW generation. For achieving these objectives, GIS is used to analyze the existing spatial relationships between various geographic, hydrology and environmental factors of the area.
