Descriptif
The thesis consists of nine chapters to address all the scopes of the thesis work. Chapter
1 contains the basic information of groundwater fluoride contamination and probable sources and
defined the scope of the thesis work. Chapter 2 is a detailed literature study with respect to
groundwater hydrogeochemistry and controlling factors of fluoride in groundwater, fluoride
toxicity on human and crops and possible remediation approaches that can reduce the exposure to
groundwater fluoride. Chapter 3 explains an emphasized view about the study area which
includes its topology, climate and geological and lithological settings. Chapter 4 contains the
analysis of groundwater hydrogeochemistry and sources, release mechanism and controlling
factors of groundwater fluoride for the study area. Chapter 5 consists the analysis of groundwater
quality for drinking and irrigation usage. Chapter 6 contains the health risks assessment using the
USEPA human health risks assessment model and dose-response characteristics for groundwater
fluoride exposure. The optimum fluoride limit in drinking water for the study area is also evaluated
in this chapter. Chapter 7 contains the health risks assessment due to groundwater heavy metal
exposure using the USEPA human health risks assessment model. Chapter 8 consists the possible
remediation approaches using alternative water sources, managed aquifer recharge and the novel
adsorbent invented in our laboratory. Chapter 9 contains interpretation of all obtained data and
salient findings of the thesis work.
