Résumé
Municipal waste problem becomes the main issue in an urban management. In fact, the issue of waste management is becoming more complex and challenging in the future due to the tremendous growth in urban population. The study aimed to assessment household solid waste management systems in Shendi city (2018-2019). This was a cross sectional study, the sampling method used was systematic random sampling method and using a questionnaire (completed in face-to-face interviews), to Assessment household Solid Waste Management Systems in Shendi city. The data was entered using SPSS Version 22.0. The results the majority (40.7%) of households store their solid waste in synthetic sack. The most of respondents (80.4%) of waste disposal facilities are not covered. The survey revealed that about (35%) of the solid waste was collected irregularly. In addition (31.1%) waste collected once per month, (36%) of households dumped their waste in open spaces. (30.2%) disposed of their waste in roads and water drains, (17.9%) used illegal waste collectors, and (12%) burned their waste and (3.9%) kept their waste at home until disposal. Most of the respondents (94.5%) answered that the local fees for solid waste disposal are reasonable, (89%) of respondents did not use any measures to reduce waste generation and (11%) used means to reduce waste generated, (7.8%) used recycling and (3%) of respondent’s reused waste and (67.1%) of the participants do not know that there are laws and legislations regulating the waste disposal process, while (32.9%) were aware of these legislations. It can be concluded that the management and practice of solid waste in Shendi City is not satisfactory. Therefore intensive education of the public, provision of bins of containers, enforcement of waste management laws could help contribute to good household waste management practices. The study recommended that the country should adopt an alternative such as recycling and combustion for energy, should be collaboration among the Environmental Protection Agency, private sector players and research institutions, there should be creation of a special fund for waste management, there should be introduction of incentives such as subsidies, concessionary loans and tax exemptions to encourage investment on waste management.
