Résumé
Despite tremendous efforts to control malaria disease, it remains a major public health problem in more than 90 countries inhabited by 40% of the global population. The study aimed to study Anopheles mosquito larval habitats in Jabara Alsheikh locality, North Kordofan State, Sudan, from October 2017 to March 2018. A total of 126 potential breeding sites of A. arabiensis were observed and physio-chemical characteristics of breeding habitats was studied in three administrative units. Anopheles Mosquito larvae were collected from positive breeding habitats using the standard dipping technique. The late instars were used as a parameter for Anopheles mosquito density estimation and taken to the laboratory for morphological identification. Results of this study showed that, rain pools was the most types of breeding habitats in the study sites (15.1%) followed by zeers (14.3%), water tanks (14.3%), barrels (14.3%), Donki streams (14.3%), tires (14.3%) and jerrecans (13.5%). The high mean number of Anopheles larvae was recorded in November 2017 (4.1±0.8) and the least mean was recorded in March 2018 (0.9±0.5). The high mean of A. arabiensis was found to be (1.5±0.6) during October 2017. Also, the high mean of A. rufipes was found (4.0±0.9) during October 2017. A. arabiensis larval presence varied not significantly between different types of breeding sites. The larvae were collected from all identified types of water accumulations, the most important breeding sites were water tanks 19.4%, zeers 19.4%, barrels, 17.7%, Donki streams 11.3%, tires 9.7% and rain pools 8.1%, P> 0.05. No correlation was found between presence of Anopheles mosquitoes and physio-chemical properties of larval habitats, P>0.001. A. arabiensis was prevalent in Blue Nile followed by A. rufipes. rain pools was the most types of breeding habitats in the study sites. No association was found between breeding habitats physio-chemical properties and presence of Anopheles mosquitoes. The study recommended that more comprehensive studies should be carried out over a longer period of time to determine the effect of the natural variations in the breeding sites on A. arabiensis larvae presence and density.
