Résumé
The city of Khartoum North is facing now more problems reflected in the movement of the rural population to the city. One of these problems was the uncontrolled management of solid waste and waste disposal that caused environmental pollution and it is effects on humans. The study was designed to be a case study of the wadafiea landfill and comprised several scientific methods including : a survey research through interviews, questionnaires and observation method and lab analysis for components of the environment (water, soil, and plant). The research was conducted to highlight and focus on the impact of inefficient solid waste management on the environment of Khartoum Bahri city. In this study twenty samples of soil, water and plant were collected from different areas around the solid waste landfill (wadiefiea dumpsite) during the dry and rainy season. The results of this study showed that waste contributed to the levels of heavy metals and physicochemical parameters in the soil and water and in the heavy metals in plants at the adjacent areas of the solid waste dumpsite. The obtained results revealed that, the water samples in the dry and rainy seasons were highly contaminated with E. coli. Five types of questionnaires were used with health officers, public and private institutions, households, residential areas around the waste dumpsite and workers in this study, the results showed that the waste production in Khartoum North was out of control of the authorities’ capacities on waste collection, disposal, and now the accumulation of waste has become a growing problem that makes Khartoum North city unhealthy, the dumping of the waste are the norm in Khartoum North and the solid waste are dumped in poorly managed dump sites such as the wadafiea dumpsite which creates many problems for the environment. The study recommended the necessity of urgent treatment to the existing accumulated quantity of wastes available at the markets, householders’ communities and water drainage and to build awareness and the capacities at all levels of the potentially significant impacts in different areas of Khartoum North of the waste on the environment and the threats it poses to human health
