Résumé
Khor Eit is located ,within the Red Sea, narrow coastal plain, between 20º00̄ - 20º 18 N and 37º 0 ̄ - 37º 15 ̄. It is characterized ,by mixed sedimentation, relating to a complex system of coralline limestone, where the marine sediments are uplifted reefs and raised to altitudes of hight 2-3 meters above the main sea level. The chemical compostion ,varies between pure carbonates, (The CaO ranging between 45%-25percent) at the crest of the reefs, which developed in transgressive, change sea level or climate, of pure carbonate, and intermix siliclastics sediments. The deposits are regressive sequences, accumulated ,during the lowering of sea level, and contain quartze, and Aluminum silicates as intermixed. Geotechnical data on the bedrock of the coralline limestone ,uplifted northern of Port Sudan, Khor Eit area were collected. The strength revealed 25-85 Mega Bascal (Mpa), water absorption at 3%-15%., add to that densities range between (1.7-2.35 g/m³), increased, with the increased of the clastic sedmints (2.65-2.85g/m)³. Properties such as porosity, density, and mineralogy, have direct effect on the rock strength. Diagenesis, start with compaction increase cementation (2.20-2.32g/m³) ,and decrease porosity ,in the case of dissolution, moreover the density ,has direct proportion with strength, end up with the dissolution of Coccoliths and Foraminifera, which increased the porosity ,and decreased density (1.33-1.7g/m³) of the rock ,and strength ranges, between (0.8-4.1 Mpa). This data ,was used to characterize rock mass conditions. The study includes, results of strength test, and field observations in the region ; and new data from investigations conducted, including studies of calcination of the limestone, slaking production of the mortar with metakaoline reaveld strength range (1.7-3.6 Mpa at curing age from three days to two months). The study area ,after the investigation has shown that, the rock material is suitable and potential ,as building materials, soil stabilization in addition to the other uses. In situ ,rock test ; strength testing of rocks ; assessment, of rock hardness , joint strength, and joint characterization, and determination, of laboratory rock mas classification ,and measurement in accordance to the standard specifications. Three different slope faces, of the rock types, at Khor Eit were defined, for the study based on their discontinuity properties. According to the lateral varation of the lithology, resulting in a great variation of block sizes, which range between smaller to larger blocks in Khor Eit. The small- and large-scale roughness, infilling material, and conditions of the discontinuities of these slopes, were determined, according to the Rock Massing Rating System (RMR) system. This indicates that rock quality is good to fair conditions and favorable, and little or no support is recommended to be used.
