Résumé
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Calotropis procera leaf and Leptadenia pyrotechnica aerial parts extracts belonging to the family (Asclepiadaceae) on certain pathogenic microbes, antioxidant activity and it includes extensive chemical study to identify the chemical composition of the active extract by chromatographic and spectroscopic methods. The phytochemical screening of both plant extracts revealed the presence of steroids, glycosides, saponins, tannins and triterpenes. Antimicroial activity were assessed by agar disk diffusion method, results showed that Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococus aurus were the most sensitive to methanol maceration extract of Calotropis procera (19 mm inhibition zone) at the same concentration. Free radical scavenging activity was evaluated using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical. The overall antioxidant activity of Calotropis proceraand Leptadenia pyrotechnica extracts was found to be the weakest. Based on phytochemial, and antimicrobial activity the methanolic extract of Calotropis procera was subjected to chromatographic and spectroscopic investigations. Column chromatographic fractionation on silica gel packed column was ended up with three fractions. Fraction two from column was further isolated using preparative thin layer chromatography, an afforded five pure compounds which were analyzed by chemical method and analyzed by infra – red (IR) and Ultra violet spectroscopy
