Résumé
Wind energy has become one of the fastest growing renewable energies in the last decade. In Colombia, although the entry of wind energy has had to face certain barriers, the government seeks to encourage the development of it. The aim of this research is to assess the wind energy potential available in La Guajira department in Colombia through the integration of Geographic Information Systems and Multicriteria Decision Methods. To reach this goal, a methodology is developed to identify and evaluate areas with wind potential based on the literature review and Colombian legislation. Appropriate environmental, technical and economic criteria are set, with which maps of restricted and evaluated areas are created. The AHP method is implemented to calculate the relative importance of each evaluation criterion, experts’ opinions from fields related to wind energy are considered. From the generated maps a final suitability map of the zones for the development of wind energy is obtained. ArcGIS software is used to manipulate the required geographic information. Then, wind speed data at 16 measurement points (seven from the IDEAM and nine from NASA) are analyzed and processed. The Weibull distribution of the wind speeds and the power curves of two wind turbines are used to calculate the annual energy produced and the annual capacity factor at each measurement point. Finally, through the GIS analysis and the suitability map, the wind energy potential of the department is estimated. The results show that there is great wind energy potential in the La Guajira department. Also, that a significant percentage of the total area of the department is available for the development of wind energy projects.
