Résumé
This study aims to predict the best agricultural land use in Burullus district, in particular, and simulate climate change scenarios on the long term in Egypt, in general.
The land capability and crop suitability assessment were achieved through the integration of Geographic Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), and ALES-Arid model.
The study area is represented by El Burullus district in Kafer El-Shihk governorate, Egypt. It occupies an area of 127338 Faddan. It belongs to the coastal agricultural land in the Nile Delta. The study area is characterized by the semiarid to arid climate conditions, with a long hot dry summer and mild winter.
Landsat8 image acquired on May 2019 was selected to represent the study area. The maximum likelihood supervised classification technique was applied on the image to produce the LULC map for the study area in 2019. Five land use/cover (LULC) categories were identified in the field and extracted from the image, These categories are cultivated land, buildup land, fish farms, lake El Burullus, and uncultivated land with Sabkhah. The Digital Elevation Model (DEM) was generated for the study area and the degree of slope and aspect were analyzed.
The fieldwork was carried out during 2016/2017, where 52 soil augers were sampled and 15 soil profiles were chosen, described in the field and sampled. The collected soil samples were air dried and then laboratory analyzed in relation to estimate the soil physical, chemical and fertility characteristics. Soil auger samples were dedicated to the production of soil mapping units according to soil salinity, soil alkalinity, and soil depth maps through the interpolation and overlay processes in ArcGIS 10.2. The land capability and suitability evaluation was performed using the ASLEarid-GIS and land capability and crop suitability were produced.
