Descriptif
This thesis is part of the research project COFISHMAP (Assessment of Moroccan Coastal Fish
Habitat and Water Quality), a cooperation between the Mohammed V Agdal Université, Rabat
and the Thünen Institute of Fisheries Ecology, Bremerhaven in the frame of the research
program PMARS (“Programme Maroc-Allemand de Recherche Scientifique”) of the German
Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Moroccan Ministère de l’Éducation
Nationale, de l’Enseignement Supérieur, de la Formation des Cadres et de la Recherche
Scientifique.
COFISHMAP provides the first fundamental survey on countrywide heavy metal and organic
pollution of four locally occurring commercial fish species, thereby enabling a description of
the environmental stress of each species and the food risk caused by these contaminations on
a broad as well as small scale.
The focus of this thesis was set on heavy metal concentrations in fish liver tissue, comparing
different fish species, individual sampling sites and, on a wide scale, the Mediterranean versus
Atlantic Moroccan coastline. Results are discussed based on relevant available literature and
maximum thresholds defined by FAO/WHO and the EU for commercial fish.
