Supporting reconstruction in selected regions of north-eastern Afghanistan

Afghanistan

Titre : Supporting reconstruction in selected regions of north-eastern Afghanistan

Pays : Afghanistan

Lead executing agency : Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development
Commissioned by : German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)

Overall term : Overall term : 2008 to 2010

Context
Long years of war have left Afghanistan’s drinking water supply infrastructure in very poor condition. Pathogens causing diarrhoea, cholera and other diseases spread where drinking water and wastewater mix, for instance if a well is not deep enough. Children in particular are highly susceptible to these diseases : Afghanistan’s child mortality rate is one of the highest in the world. Three out of four children do not live past the age of five. Less than one-third of households in Kunduz and Takhar provinces have access to clean drinking water, while in Badakhshan province only 13 % do.

Approach
GTZ is supporting the construction and rehabilitation of wells on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Both shallow and deep wells have been bored, and other sources have been tapped. Water reservoirs have been built and supply systems have been rehabilitated. All in all, more than 150 drinking water projects have been supported in the regions of Kunduz, Takhar and Badakhshan.
