Présentation
This project aims to implement, document and assess the impact of an eco-design approach for women and children in Saharan oases. Oasis societies are today in crisis, suffering from significant rural exodus, a very high unemployment rate among women, poor children’s education, and an increasing number of disasters in historical palm groves. In this context we wish to examine the perspectives opened up by the development of a creative dynamic based on the use of locally available environmental resources. This approach is expected to reach concrete outcomes in terms of i) women empowerment ii) children empowerment and iii) ecosystem regeneration. By going further in defining decent work and quality education than productivity-centered vision, the project supports the creation of spaces within women’s handcraft cooperatives where the concept of “living well together” can be rooted in social practices (collective work but also meals, songs, discussions, etc.). Within these spaces, public issues such as the fate of agricultural practices, the maintenance of the palm groves but also authority over resources such as land and water are actively discussed. The space of the cooperative favors the emergence of considerations on the future of the community but also on the participation of women leaders in local political life. Ripple effects on the community will be supported and documented. Our observations will be based on three sites in Morocco and will be put into perspective with the Tunisian and Egyptian contexts.
