Présentation
The research visit serves the purpose to intensify the exchange between political sciences and the study of religion which is a remaining challenge in the study of religion and politics. The main task is to further develop a common approach to religion in the public sphere by including religious politics. Starting from J.S. Migdal’s “state in society” approach we consider historical path dependencies and historical sociology as a theoretical and methodological framework. During the research visit, we want to prepare an article with case studies, Turkey and Egypt, and we want to discuss our ideas with colleagues and students. We expect to demonstrate a significant difference in Turkey’s and Egypt’s domination of the public sphere by Islamists and by the state. Thus, we can move from a post-secularism (Habermas) to a more power-centered approach considering a general competition between religious and state actors. The results are important for the current discussions about religion and politics in the two countries and in the two disciplines. Consequently, the final task of the research visit is to develop a joint research project.
