Résumé
Uzbekistan has one of the world’s most complex and most water consuming irrigation agriculture systems. It is generally argued that Uzbekistan’s continued agricultural policy focused on the production of water-intensive cotton and wheat will further exacerbate environmental unsustainability and water scarcity in the region. This thesis takes a closer look at the lessons learnt from independent actors’ interventions to present views on restructuring Uzbekistan’s agricultural system. The practitioners’ insights obtained through personal interviews are presented around three cases of interventions concerning participatory water management, water productivity improvement and crop diversification practices. Based on the practical cases and lessons learnt, the thesis provides a more nuanced understanding of challenges and opportunities in the context of water-intensive agriculture in Uzbekistan, identifying areas for sustainable and resource-efficient agriculture.
