Résumé
Remittances represent more than 10% of the GDP in Senegal. About a third of all Senegalese households receive an annual amount of 1200-2100€ from migrants. Depending on the migration country Senegalese emigrants stay between 6 and 12 years on average abroad before returning back to Senegal. 48,8% of the male migrants and 34,9% of the female migrants are single. This indicates in return, that half of the migrants have to leave their own family. Referring to the family portrait of the most spread ethnicity in Senegal – the Wolof, it will be examined what kind of impact migration does have on the family structure and the network of relations between the migrant and the so-called left-behinds and if and, how Remittances influence the relationships. Problem-centered interviews (Witzel 2000) with left-behind families in the Senegalese region Louga determine the empirical basis of this survey whilst taking into account existing content-related migration literature and discussions with local migration experts
