Wheat(Triticum aestivum L.)is one of the three major grains that are crucial to the global food industry.However,drought is usually one of the major environmental stresses limiting wheat productivity.It is an important problem to improve wheat yield and drought resistance by sustainable methods.The results showed that the symbiotic fungi of plants living in the arid environment for a long time could not only help the original host to resist the soil stress,but also give the non-host plant the stress tolerance of specific habitat,providing a new idea for improving the drought resistance of crops.In this study,dark septate endophyte(DSE)isolated from the roots of Psammochloa villosa in the desert area of northwest China was used as the research object to investigate the growth promotion and drought resistance potential of DSE itself and its host,and to jointly select efficient and drought resistant DSE strains.Under the greenhouse condition,five dominant strains were selected for artificial inoculation experiment,under normal water condition(ND),mild drought condition(MD)and severe drought condition(ED),to study the effects of DSE inoculation on nutritional growth,drought resistance physiological indexes,mineral nutrition,grain yield and soil factors of wheat at different growth stages.To comprehensively explore the growth promoting and drought resistance potential of DSE on wheat and analyze its drought resistance mechanism.The main test results are as follows:1.The combined screening test showed that DSE had higher tolerance to drought stress in vitro,which might be related to the increase of superoxide dismutase(SOD)activity and soluble protein content.All the seven strains of DSE successfully colonized wheat roots,and significantly increased grain yield,root length,root surface area and aboveground N content of wheat under drought stress.Different DSE strains have different drought resistance ability and influence on wheat growth.Alternaria alternata、Alternaria chlamydosporigena、Alternaria sorghi、Paraphoma pye and Paraphoma radicina have strong effects on promoting growth and drought resistance.2.Artificial inoculation test showed that all the five dominant DSE strains had beneficial effects on the growth and physiological function of wheat seedlings.DSE can alleviate the inhibition and damage caused by drought stress on the growth and development of wheat seedlings by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes,soluble substance content,photosynthesis and auxin content of wheat seedlings
