Climate-Water-Nexus : Integrated Water Resource Management in the Niger River Basin

Afrique (Ghana, Niger)

Titre : Climate-Water-Nexus : Integrated Water Resource Management in the Niger River Basin

Pays/Région : Ghana, Niger

Durée  : September 1, 2022 - April 30, 2023

Descriptif
The project aims to improve implementation of transboundary Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) measures for climate change adaptation (CCA) and mitigation (CCM) in the Niger basin, which will drive long-term positive impacts for the resilience of livelihoods and ecosystems. Capacities of regional, national and local decision makers and institutions are strengthened to accelerate implementation of transboundary IWRM, which is aligned to CCA and CCM measures as planned in member states’ NDCs and NAPs. The improved decision-making processes are informed and supported by successful transboundary and climate-smart IWRM solutions from 3 selected sub-basins where mitigation opportunities are identified and the resilience of the local populations is strengthened by climate-smart agriculture, protecting biodiversity, improving the management of floods and droughts. This is accompanied by evidence-based planning tools, positive behaviour change communication and upscaling mechanisms. IWMI will lead the activities in the Benue LightHouse Basin that covers Chad, Cameroon and Nigeria.
