Somali Regional State is one of the 9 regional states of Ethiopia. The population of the region is estimated at 5,748,998 (CSA, 2014) out of which 46 percent are females and the remaining 54 percent are males. Somali region is predominantly pastoralists and the livelihood activities are dependent on the natural resource base, and are therefore vulnerable to covariate shocks such as a drought, which undermines crop farming, livestock production, and agricultural labour and herding opportunities. Ethiopia is facing the worst drought in more than 50 years, as a result of which major food security emergency is on-going in central and eastern Ethiopia. One of the highly affected areas in the country is Somali region and particularly Fafan Zone (FEWSNET, Dec, 2015). National estimates indicates that more than 10.2 Million people affected(HRD,2016).In Somali region in particular in Fafan zone a multi-agency rapid assessment conducted in December 2016 indicate that 110,331 people are affected by the drought. The Ethiopian government through the release of HRD, 2016 has requested the support of INGO, bilateral aid agencies and private sector to contribute and respond to the crisis. Islamic Relief has also conducted a rapid need assessment in the region and has identified similar needs and was requested by the regional government to respond to the emergency. IRE has already started emergency response operation in two Zones, Afder and Sitti and intends to expand the operation to Fafan zone. Accordingly this proposed project will address the emergency Nutrition needs of drought/ El Niño affected population in Tuliguled and Jigjiga Districts of Fafan Zone and Meisso Woreda in Sitti Zone. The target population for the project is , malnourished children and Pregnant and Lactating Women. The intervention includes nutrition support through standard nutrition approach Community Managed Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) response, hygiene and sanitation promotion and capacity building to District health and experts/government staff. The project will be implemented over a period of six months with the support of local government and community.
