Contexte
The Afar Region is facing complex humanitarian emergency following the invasion of most woredas of the region by the TPLF forces. Renewed armed clashes across Zone 2 of Afar region have resulted in thousands of people displaced since mid-December 2021 among them many women, girls and children who are particularly at risk for sexual exploitation and abuse and are exposed to negative coping mechanisms such as child labor, transactional sex, and harmful practices. According to regional authorities, 300,000 people were recently displaced. Some of those displaced are in remote areas, with little access to emergency assistance, while an unclear number are in collective sites in Arefda, Erebti, Gube, and Urukdi town in Zone-2 (OCHA Jan.2022). Children and Pregnant and Lactating Women (PLW) are considered to be most at risk for malnutrition and highly likely to become wasted. In Afar, an estimated 80,000 children under five years old and PLW need malnutrition preventative and treatment interventions (OCHA Feb 2022). The report also indicated that, only 22% of the 414 facilities available in the region are currently functional. This severely affects people’s access to health services and raised the need for humanitarian response.
