Descriptif
This is a four (4) months project aimed to provide immediate lifesaving support and recovery to communities affected by drought in Mandera and Garissa County who are in dire need of lifesaving supplies (food) and water. The project has targeted to support a total of 2800 households (18,000 individuals) in -Mandera East sub-county covering Khalalio, Gadudia, Arresa and Qumbiso ; Lafey sub-county covering sala and Mandera North sub-county covering Rhamu. In Garissa county the project will target residents of Fafi, Hulugho and Lagadera sub-counties. The project involves provision of food supplies to the targeted households, following the vulnerability criteria. With the increased malnutrition cases especially in children under 5 years and mothers who are pregnant and lactating, it is expected that the intervention will provide food packs rich in carbohydrates, proteins, pulses and vegetable oils. The procurement and distribution of the essential live saving nutrition commodities will address the immediate food requirements and save life. It also involves rehabilitation of water sources, short-term water trucking due to severe water shortage experienced in both regions as a result of drought. In addition to immediate life-saving assistance, IRK will also focus on building resilience of target communities through supporting communities to identify local and affordable food processing technologies and post-harvest storage. This will ensure that communities are able to withstand future droughts without risking their lives or their livelihoods. By doing this, the project aims to support the most vulnerable and disadvantaged groups of the society, mostly women, children, persons with disability, sick and aged persons, who cannot walk long distances in search of food thus saving lives
