Descriptif
With the Ramadan season on the way, tens of thousands of Syrians living in temporary accommodation throughout Lebanon lack food security, especially during the holy month. The crisis in Syria is well into its ninth year, and Lebanon continues to host over one million Syrian refugees. According to the VASyR 2019 : ÿÿA large proportion of households were reported marginally food insecure in 2019 (63%), compared to 57% in 2018. ÿÿFood insecurity is highest in the North (38%) and Mount Lebanon (33%). ÿÿÿ Women-headed households are more food insecure than men-headed households (35% vs 28% respectively). ÿÿHouseholds living in non-residential shelters (36%) are more food insecure than those living in non-permanent (26%) or residential shelters (29%). ÿÿFood security has increased in two of the three pillars of food security : food consumption and livelihood based coping strategies. ÿÿThe share of expenditure on food has increased in 2019, which indicates increased economic vulnerability. This targeted humanitarian assistance is critical to sustaining the refugee population and easing the strain on the host community. The situation of Syrian refugees in Lebanon remains highly precarious, as shown in the same report. During the holy month of Ramadan, 1441, Islamic Relief will support refugees and vulnerable host community families in different areas in Lebanon to ensure they have the means to boost their food security in the fasting season. Special measures will be put into place to ensure staff, beneficiaries, as well as other stakeholders, have proper protection against the COVID-19 virus. These will include wearing protection equipment, such as face masks, gloves, and rope, in addition to sterilisation material. The project aims to reach more than 3,800 families (around 16,700 individuals) by distributing food parcels and bread packs.
