Présentation
This comparative project focuses on democratic culture in order to identify expanding spheres of socio-political opposition in West African municipalities, notably Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. Here socio-political opposition includes, first, the sphere of party politics ; second, the sphere of collective and cultural manifestations of identity and belonging ; third, the sphere of development and socio-economic change ; fourth, the sphere of public debate and mass media ; and, finally, the sphere of anger, frustration and resistance where citizens express themselves politically while staying outside of formal politics.
The main research question concerns how political actors engage in spheres of socio-political opposition and the extent to which these spheres are expanding in the context of democratic decentralisation.
Coordination : Uppsala University
