Présentation
Drought forcasts are critical in order to provide early warnings that facilitate actions in mitigation the impacts. The project aims test how a local scale early warning system (EWS) for drought could be designed in order to increase rural community resilience.
In cooperation with University of KwaZulu-Natal, CSIR and the EU DEWFORA project (where we will be an unpaid partner) we will define a pilot area in the Limpopo river basin to test how such a system could be created in reality. The work consists of (1) Assessment of institutional framework and communication channels between EWS, authorities and communities ; (2) Locally defined drought indices and soft observations of signs of drought ; (3) Wireless sensor networks for local monitoring of drought indices ; (4) Regional seasonal and decadal forecast coupled to hydrological/agricultural models.
Coordination : Linköping University
Financement : Swedish Research Council
Budget : 3,600,000 kr
