Présentation
By 2050, more than 60% of sub-Saharan Africa´s population will be living in urban areas. Urban population growth combined with increasing global food prices and competition between food and non-food crop production associated with the impact of global climate change increases urban food crop production.
However, the various environmental, social and economic aspects of urban agriculture (UA) are poorly understood. Within the framework of this multidisciplinary proposal we aim to answer the following questions : 1) How does UA influence household food security and welfare in the context of rising food prices ? 2) Do differences based on socio-economic status and gender occur in patterns of UA with respect to self-provisioning, income diversification and entrepreneurship ? 3) What technology and marketing strategies do households use that apply UA as a method of income diversification ? 4) Which health related consequences may occur for producers and consumers of agricultural products generated in urban settings ? 5) Do regulatory frameworks exist to maintain food safety standards ? 6) What is the policy design encouraging dynamic, equitable and environmentally sustainable agriculture ? Study targets are medium sized cities in Ghana and Kenya. Science based evidence from this project will result in identification of possible frameworks for combining income opportunities and improvements in food security with environmentally sustainable production techniques and food safety aspects.
