Présentation
Many African tree species provide products that can contribute to food, medicine, and income to rural low-income households. The development of such tree species can also be an incentive for forest conservation and carbon storage.

However, the market development of such species must be sustainable and benefit local producers. The project analyzes sustainable business models for tree products in Kenya. We focus on Tamarindus indica, which provides popular and nutritious food products with a market demand. The research comprises : A) Documentation of local, traditional knowledge about tree products, B) Identification of factors for sustainable and fair quality production, and C) elaboration of a sustainable business model for tree products. The research applies theories of ethnobotany, tropical forest management, bio-based value chains, and sustainable, fair business models. It will be conducted in close dialogue and collaboration with local stakeholders. Gender issues will be key because women are the most involved in NTFP activities. Participatory observations will be combined with interviews, surveys, and focus group discussions. Our preliminary results will be discussed with a scientific board and with local stakeholders. Expected findings will fill existing scientific knowledge gaps, and be applied for the sustainable development of Tamarindus products. The findings are expected to identify opportunities for poverty reducing, sustainable business models for tree products.
