Titre : ICI Ethiopia : Capacity building in genetic evaluation and new breeding tools to strengthen the Ethiopian dairy development

Pays/Région : Ethiopie

Date : Start date 2010-02-16 // End date 2019-12-31

Identifiant : 290-ICI ETHIOPIA
Type de projet : Development and innovation oriented (research) project

Objectif
The overall objective of the IKI-Ethiopia project was to strengthen the Ethiopian dairy development through transfer of Finnish know-how in dairy genetic evaluation and new breeding tools and thereby to build the institutional capacity of the National Artificial Insemination center (NAIC) and train human resources.

Specifically, the project objectives were : * To build and strengthen Ethiopian national dairy herd performance recording and advisory system * To establish national dairy cattle routine genetic evaluation and breeding programs * To upscale national dairy herd performance recording system and * To strengthen the institutional and organizational capacities of institutes involved in dairy breeding inputs supply and services and build a strong human capacity in dairy cattle breeding.

Présentation
With these objectives, the ICI-Ethiopia project established the national dairy herd performance recording system and built the human capacity to identify, improve and make available locally adapted and more productive dairy cattle genotypes to resource poor dairy farmers. This allows fewer but more productive livestock (cows) to be kept, thus directly reducing the stress on the natural resource base, thereby combating climate change, and reducing threats to environmental health. Further, by increasing productivity per animal, the project contributed to the development of environmentally sound dairy development in Ethiopia
