Résumé
The purpose of this dissertation is to illustrate and explain the reasons for the resource management in two localities of Mexico where desertification is occurring. Together with the analysis of these regions’ decision-making processes on resource management, an assessment of the perception of desertification processes among local inhabitants will also be discussed. The dissertation is the product of field research on evaluating the different degrees of environmental perception observed among randomly selected inhabitants of two rural-dryland counties of Mexico The first step was the establishment of the three following contentions : * 1. The local conditions of economic and social deprivation over-shadow the perception of desertification and environmental degradation. * 2. There are different recognizable perceptions of desertification processes between the local ejidatarios’ and that of the regional governmental and institutional leaders. * 3. The ejido system, a product of the agrarian reform in Mexico, is enhancing desertification processes within the tv.’c selected areas. This study, therefore, provides information and an ossessme’it cf the perceptions of desertification processes taking place in two rural-dryland counties of Mexico ; each of which is located in a different state but not more than 50 kilometers (31 miles) apart. The two counties, which are totally located within Mexico’s arid area, are the county of Pinos, state of Zacatecas, and the county of Santo Domingo, state of San Luis Potosi_. Also, as previously illustrated in figures 1.2 and 1.3, both counties fall within the "severe" désertification category, and the vulnerability for further desertification is perceived as "very severe" for Pinos county, and equally divided between "severe" and "very severe" for Sarto Domingo county.
